The book consists of three parts: the Road, Africa and Make friends around. The first part is the introduction of the whole book and reflects the era background of the author’s generation. The second and third parts are the key of the book. The part of Africa includes four chapters, introducing his experience of being an interpreter, researcher, and then engaging in front-line diplomatic work in Africa on behalf of China and the CPC. The part of Make friends around includes five chapters, mainly introducing the author’s experience of working on the Asian affairs in International Department, Central Committee of CPC.

“A Tale of Two Continents” is the first book about foreign exchanges of the CPC in China. The author records his experience, perception or hope in the inter-party communications in the form of brief description. First, from the aspect of going to Africa and neighboring countries, it reflects the process of Chinese Communist Party going to the world and the importance of inter-party communications. Second, from the perspective of the CPC's move to Africa and Asia, it reflects the course of China's overall diplomacy. Third, the book also reflects China's march to the center of the world stage. Fourth, the author hopes to enhance readers' understanding of Africa and Asia to some extent through this book.

In the analysis of African situation, Ai Ping emphasized that the essential issue in Africa is the economic development, and we should use the scientific methodology of Marxism to analyze the reasons why Africa's economic development has not achieved the expected results since its independence. The key is to explore and find its own development approach, and the government should still play a key role in African countries. In the aspect of China-Africa relation, China’s foreign policy to Africa should correspond with African real situation. The comprehensive understanding of Africa is the important basis for China to develop the inter-party exchanges. At last, Ai Ping analyzed the African countries’ exploration on their own national development roads, taking Ethiopia and the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front as examples.

After the special report, Ai Ping also interacted with the participants. Ambassador Shu Zhan, Counselor of Chinese Asian and African Society, commented on the book and the special report. Shu Zhan said he read the book and got a lot, with two questions of the influence of African traditional institutions on current African governance and the situation of China’s infrastructure construction in Africa after the implementation of the “Belt and Road” Initiative.
