Evaluation for the Social-economic Impact and Poverty Alleviation Endeavored by Chinese Enterprises Projects in Africa

Institute of Economics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences

Background

With the growth of economy, the Chinese government has assumed more and more international development obligations. More and more new infrastructure invested or assisted by China have been completed in the African region. What is the impact of these projects on the local society, and how the local people evaluate China's investment and assistance projects? Is will help us to improve the future aid plans to Africa.

Significance

African scholars often express the wish that China's poverty alleviation experience can be extended to poor areas in Africa and help the local population improve their living conditions and development opportunities. However, the evaluation report of China's poverty reduction experience applied in Africa is seldom seen in Chinese and English research literature. Timely collation of information in this area and theoretical research work in this area is very important for enriching development economics theory.

Basic framework

We will use the basic thinking of development economics and discuss the concrete contributions from China's aid projects to Africa's current and future development. Here, we need to point out that the traditional western development economics theory has not succeeded in promoting the local economic prosperity in African countries. We will use Chinese thinking to re-understand the development issues of Africa. Another research idea of this study is to discuss the economic value of China's aid projects to Africa for poverty reduction goals based on China's poverty reduction theory, which is helpful to explore the general rules of China's poverty reduction experience. This is a joint project. Chinese scholars and African scholars will conduct research on the same issue based on respective standpoints. Finally, we will study and find the equilibrium point.

Methodology

This is an exploratory research work. In the initial research work, we will untangle theoretical explanation of related issues through field investigation, literature research and experimental economics research methods. At the same time, we also survey domestic enterprises and representative employees involved in projects in Africa, invite some experienced delegations to participate in our discussions, to confirm our understanding.
