Division of Middle East Studies

Division of Middle East Studies associated with the establishing of the Institute of West-Asian and African Studies experienced about half a century of ups and downs. The establishment of Division of Middle East Studies and its development has experienced several adjustments in different historical periods. Along with the eras of change, social development and the needs of the domestic and international situation, DMES has be continuously developing and contributing to the society.
 
 
History and Current Situation

Since establishment of the Institute in 1961 and by during the Cultural Revolution, Middle East studies has undergone changes and adjustments from the Arab Study Group to the Group of West Asian and North African. The Institute restarted works 1978, and Middle Eastern Studies is divided into three Divisions: Division of Arab and Israeli Research, Division of North Africa and Division of Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey and Cyprus. The three divisions merged into the Division of Middle East Studies in 1982.
DMES divided in two as so called Division of Middle East Politics and Division of Middle East Economics in 1994, and then turn back in one in January 1999.
 
Now, Director of Middle East Studies is Prof. Mr.Tang Zhichao, Deputy Director is Liu Dong.
There are 9 fellows in DMES including 3 professor, 4 associate professors and 2 assistant professor.
Most of them have experiences of abroad studies or as visiting researcher in deferent foreign institutes and also they keep close relations with scholars in foreign institutes and conduct academic exchanges.
 
 
Main research areas and tasks 
Division of Middle East Studies (DMES) engaged in the areas of international political, economic research.
After the founding of the Institute to the early 1980s, DMES in quite a long time emphasis on dynamic studies: such as follow-up on changes in the political situations of the countries in Middle East, the theories and practices of the national liberation movements and political parties and socialist movements in the Middle East, the rise or fall of military regimes in the region, social contradictions and regional conflicts, political and economic development in the Middle East, the choice of the path of social development, great powers’competition in the region, as well as the relations of China and Middle East countries.
 
DMES now is mainly engaging in the theoretical and empirical research in the fields of Middle East politics, economics, international relations, and also history and social culture. In addition, DMES has also been paying close attention to and tracking a series of major issues or hot spot issues in the Middle East: such as the Arab-Israeli conflicts, the Palestinian issue, the Gulf issues, oil and the world's political and economic situation, and other major events and impacts upon the region.
DMES has obvious advantages in building theoretical system of Middle East studies, the political system,the relationship between great powers and Middle East, the Arab-Israeli conflicts and the peace process in Middle East, Middle East economy, oil and energy security, and major countries’  politics and economies, as well gradually expands the study of the history of Middle East countries, social culture aspects, in order to strengthen the comprehensive interdisciplinary research.
 
The most fellows of DMES have entered the Innovation Project of IWAAS of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, namely the innovation project “China’s Strategy to Middle East and Great Powers’ Relations”and the innovation project “Relations of Middle East Countries and China in Economic, Trade and Energy”. The innovation project “China’s Strategy to Middle East and Great Powers’focus on systematically combing the relationship between China and countries in Middle East, putting forward the future strategy of China and Middle East countries, as well as conducting in-depth studies on the great powers’ relationship such as U.S.A, Russia, EU, Japan, India and China. And the innovation project“Relations of Middle East Countries and China in Economic, Trade and Energy”focus on analyzing relationship between China and Middle Eastern Countries in energy, trade, finance and capacity cooperation.
 
 
Important Research Achievements
DMES, on the basis of long academic accumulations and in-depth studies, has completed and offered a series of important research achievements including books, papers and reports with greater impacts at domestic and abroad, contributing to Middle East studies in China. DMES published a large number of papers with theoretical depth, systematic analysis upon the important issues and hotspot issues in the Middle East. The major books and Papers published in Chinese, just a part of them published in foreign languages, and some works was also translated into foreign languages by research institutions or media abroad.
