About Us
The Division of Security Studies was set up in November 2019 as one of the outcomes and achievements of the discipline adjustment of the Institute of West-Asian and African Studies (IWAAS) of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) and the China-Africa Institute (CAI). The Division is dedicated to carry out academic studies on traditional and non-traditional security in the Middle East and Africa, including regional, inter-ethnic and international conflicts, terrorism, displacement, as well as security challenges of regional political, economic and social development.
The Division currently hosts 6 researchers, among whom Dr.Tong Fei (Associate Researcher,tongfei@cass.org.cn), and Dr.Deng Yanting ( Assistant Researcher,dengyanting@cass.org.cn), they take the posts of the Director and the Deputy Director.
Major Fields of Research
The expertise and academic fields of researchers are as follows:
Tong Fei: security, economic and social development in the Middle East; Country Studies: the United Arab Emirates, Oman.
Deng Yanting: security challenges of Eastern African integration and members of the Eastern African Community; Country Studies: Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda.
Yuan Wu: peace and security of the Great Lakes Region; Country Study: the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Wang Hongyi: anti-terrorism, peace-keeping and security of Africa; Country Study: Cameroon, Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Liu Linzhi: military development, armed-conflicts, and security of the Red Sea; Country Study: Egypt, Sudan.
Ma Xueqing: history and culture of the Middle East and North Africa; Country Study: Syria, Morocco.
