Born in 1972 in Longxian, Shaanxi Province, Dr. Li Wengang is associate research fellow with Institute of West Asian and African Studies (IWAAS) of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). He got his BA in history from Northwest University ( Xi'an) in 1995, his MA from Nankai University (Tianjin)in 1998, and his PhD in Law from School of International Relations of Peking University in 2007. He started African studies after joined IWAAS in 1998. In 2007, he paid short academic visits to Nigeria and France. In 2009, he was academic visitor at Centre of African Studies, School of Social and Political Science in University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK, under the support of China State Scholarship. He has participated in various research programs chaired by leading Chinese scholars and experts on African studies, such as Agricultural development in African countries, religions and politics in Sub-Saharan Africa, ethnic issues in Africa, yellow book for African development, civil societies in Middle East and Africa, modernization model of Nigeria and China's soft power in Africa. His main research interests include Nigerian ethnic/religious issues; African Islam; China-Africa relations; Ethnic issues in Africa. He has published several articles on Nigeria and edited a book on Liberia 2006.
