The Division of Social and Cultural Studies of the Institute of West-Asian and African Studies (IWAAS), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) mainly studies the historical, social and cultural issues of countries in West Asia and Africa, and focuses on exploring the social factors and cultural origins of contemporary hot issues in West Asia and Africa. The Division was originally established in March 2004 and restructured in 2019. Now there are 6 members, including Liu Naiya (Associate Research Fellow), Wang Jinyan (Associate Research Fellow), Jiang Mingxin (Associate Research Fellow), Li Yujie (Associate Research Fellow), Ma Wencheng (Assistant Research Fellow) and Tian Muye (Assistant Research Fellow).
The researchers of this division have their own expertise, they have in-depth research in southern Africa, Maghreb region, Horn of Africa, Turkey and the Greater Middle East, and also have rich practical experience in diplomatic affairs. Most of members have hosted or participated in innovative projects and various topics of the institute. The Division of Social and Cultural Studies is willing to carry out various forms of academic exchanges and cooperation with domestic and foreign research institutions, government departments, universities and individuals who are interested in studying social and cultural issues in West Asia and Africa.
